SIBU: Sarah Lau Shi Yan, after completing SPM Qualification at SMK Bandar Bintulu, decided to pursue her study in accounting at Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI). She first started with Diploma in Accounting, then currently on her way to complete Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Accounting. Sarah shares what drove her decision, “I chose to study in the accounting program as the accounting field offers a wide array of career options, from auditing, tax accounting, and cost accounting to managerial accounting, with several professional certifications for each. Sarah believes that an investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. Studying at MPI is really an amazing experience. MPI offers her a chance to learn beyond the classroom boundary. The lecturers and staff are very friendly and supportive. She has really enjoyed the learning environment and her experiences at MPI. Sarah regards MPI as one of the best colleges to study at in Southeast Asia. When asked about the factors that contributed to the success of her study, she said, “MPI provides the resources I need to learn and grow while pursuing my goals. I have gained many great experiences, and many of them challenge me out of my comfort zone, either extracurricularly or curricularly. Besides, we have a myriad of opportunities as undergraduate students. Students are offered various scholarships and guided to prestigious firms to work for their internships.”
Sarah shared that at the age of 17, she was very vast and indistinct with her life goal. With family recommendation, accounting became her profession. Accountants are the backbone of business. It’s highly flexible. Whether one wants to work in any industry, accounting could be his or her route in. Theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge taught by experienced lecturers allowed her to further her potential in her passion and goals. “This prepared me well and enhanced my confidence level to face the challenges I will face in my future career.”
Sarah shared that her ambition is to become an auditor. Auditor work with a diverse range of clients, which will expose her to various industries, business models, and organizational structures. This broad exposure can help her develop a deep understanding of different industries and business and build a wide-ranging network of contacts.
Sarah has been a student at MPI for five years. She has witnessed a part of the growth of this college, and she believes that MPI has the potential to become better and better. “Being a Pilleyian for the past years has been my pleasure. “There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.’ While at the MPI, there will be a group of brothers and sisters in Christ to accompany you up those stairs. I believe being surrounded by people from different cultures and backgrounds brings out the most memorable experiences.
