New Scholarship Partnership Strengthens Boys’ Brigade and MPI Commitment to Youth Development

SIBU:Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) and the Boys’ Brigade Sarawak are committed to investing in the potential of young people through the launch of the Sarawak Boys’ Brigade Scholarship on Sept 27, 2025.

Through this collaboration, five members of the Boys’ Brigade will be offered scholarships at MPI starting January 2026 intake, with the hope of uplifting young men who have shown character, dedication, and promise but may lack the resources to pursue further studies.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Principal of MPI, Dr. Lu Huong Ying, said the collaboration would be more than just financial support; it would open the door for these students to professional education, leadership roles, community service, and lives lived with purpose.

She said that, with the readiness to support these members, MPI offers a variety of relevant diploma programmes that match their interests and capacities—whether in business, social work, early childhood education, or other fields.

She added that MPI also offers affordable and accessible education in a setting grounded in Christian values.

“We also provide practical, hands-on learning. For example, students in the Early Childhood Education programme undergo significant field experience, and similarly, social work programmes include applied learning,” she pointed out.

She also said this collaboration would encourage excellence, empowerment, hope, and strengthen the community.

However, to ensure the success of the programme, both MPI and the Boys’ Brigade will need to commit to certain expectations, including the selection of the five students based on defined criteria such as character, involvement in the Boys’ Brigade, leadership potential, academic readiness, and financial need.

MPI, on the other hand, will provide mentorship, pastoral care, and support systems to help students transition, succeed, and graduate.

“Both parties will monitor and evaluate the programme to ensure it is meeting its goals and make adjustments as needed,” she emphasised.

Meanwhile, according to State Commissioner Honorary Captain Sim Tze Sian, the scholarship was established to recognise the efforts of its members in both academics and character formation.

“It aims to encourage them to pursue knowledge while holding firmly to their faith and values.

“We hope that through this scholarship, they will experience relief from financial burdens in their studies and be empowered to step boldly into their future,” he pointed out.

He also expressed hope that this scholarship would encourage its members to remain in Sarawak for their education while continuing to serve actively in their local Boys’ Brigade community.

Sim thanked all supporting organisations, donors, and the organising committee for their hard work in making this scholarship a reality.

“Dear BB members, you are the future of our nation and society. I encourage you to treasure this opportunity—not only to pursue excellence in your studies but also to live a life of integrity, courage, love, and service,” he urged.
