Big Fish Little Pond

SIBU: SIBU: In his 2013 book ‘David and Goliath’, Malcolm Gladwell discussed the Big Fish—Little Pond Effect, describing how a small pond could maximise students’ chances of thriving and succeeding in any university or college.

It is an idea that students often thrive and develop confidence in an environment that allows them to do just that, ensuring growth in both academic and co-curricular activities.

Final year student of Diploma in Computer Science at Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) Alexson Voon Chuen Shiang, 23, had a busy time throughout these three years as a student on campus.

He was the president of the Music Club and vice president of the Student Council, and now he is one of the Student Ambassadors and part of the MPI Multimedia Team.

This is one of the advantages of MPI being a small campus. There are many opportunities to join any organisation on campus and learn leadership skills by taking up the position.

I also learned about working as a team; how to lead and listen to suggestions. I also learned a lot about communication skills which I believe will help me after I graduated,” he said.

Alexson from Kuching said that he chose to study at MPI because as far as he knows, MPI is the only private higher learning institution that offers a Diploma in Computer Science.

A technology and computer enthusiast, he said he learned about programming, IT knowledge and theory.

Our batch, we designed games and posters, and we also touched on computer graphics. We covered many things.

One of the most exciting parts was creating my games under visual programming. It was an enjoyable subject because you gathered your team and designed our games.

I remember we built mini games, sudoku, and fish-eating game. Of course, we learned the basic part and more 2D graphic, so not that complicated,” he enthused.

MPI’s Manager of Marketing and Student Recruitment Bobo Wong briefed them on the programmes and financial aids available at MPI.

He also said that MPI, being a small campus, allowed him to have personal coaching on subjects he didn’t understand.>/p>

Will he have the time to study with many things to do?

Alexson said although time management is not his strength, he would find time to study in the evening and dedicate the day to the activities and lessons on the campus.

He said that being actively involved in MPI activities is important because he wanted to make his campus life more memorable and meaningful.

If we only study and no play, it would be very stressful. This is my final semester before going for internship. I think I will miss a lot of things once I leave this campus,” he said.

He hopes to pass all the subjects in the final semester and move on to the next goal.

For three years, I’ve never failed any subjects, so this time I do not want to fail any subjects,” he said.

MPI has always been dedicated to providing the best student-centred learning experience on campus.

To learn more about the MPI, visit the campus during Open Day 2025 on April 12 from 9am to 3pm.

Course counselling, a campus tour, and information on scholarships, loans, and aptitude tests will help students find courses that suit them.

All full time programmes of MPI are MQA accredited and students who need financial aid to start their programme with MPI can tap into the national higher education fund (PTPTN).

As part of MPI’s commitment to delivering industry and community-relevant programmes, two new programmes, Diploma in Nursing and Diploma in Special Education (Early Years), are being developed and will be offered soon. There will also be an introduction to a new short course – Patisserie, for youths with a keen interest in baking and pastry arts.

Also in the pipeline is programme counselling for Early Childhood Education (ECE) Programme Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), ACCA Foundation in Accountancy (ACCA FIA), Accounting, Taxation, Marketing MUET 1, Social Work, Business Management, Computer Science, Finance and Investment, and Intensive English.
