Methodist Pilley Institute(MPI) superseded Pilley Memorial Secondary School, which was established in 1967 in loving memory of Mr. John Pilley. Mr. & Mrs. Pilley were both born and educated in China and served as missionaries in Fuchow, China until they were forced to leave in 1949 due to the communist takeover.
Based on their missionary experience in China, they became strong advocates of education for all, especially for girls and the underprivileged as they both toiled selflessly in establishing schools and churches.
In 1960, Mr. Pilley passed away from a massive heart attack and was buried in Sibu. Mrs. Pilley left for Nashville, Tennessee in the United States where she resided until her death at the age of 93 on 11 July, 2002. Although the Pilleys only served 11 years (1949-1960) as missionaries in the Methodist Mission in Sarawak, the impact of their love, service and sacrifice on the Sarawakians, especially people of Sibu and Sarikei will be for time immemorial.
In the mid 1960s, when the Board of Education of the Methodist Church in Sarawak (SCAC) met to set up a private Methodist secondary school in Sibu, they unanimously agreed to name it in the honour of the Pilleys. The Pilley Memorial Secondary School was set up to cater for the needs of Form 3 to Form 5 students.
In April 1991, in response to changes in the educational policies, Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) was established as one of the pioneering private higher learning institutions (IPTS) in Sarawak. MPI started out by offering tertiary education namely, Diploma in Accounting, Diploma in Business Management and Diploma in Computer Science.
Over the years, the institute has grown both in size and reputation as a well-respected IPTS among the local Sibu community and in the state of Sarawak as a whole. Many students have graduated with professional qualifications in the fields of Accountancy (e.g. LCCI, ACCA, CAT) and Business Management (ABE, ICSA) and Computer Science (IMIS) and many too have successfully pursued their further studies overseas or at other reputable IPTS.
Today, MPI continues to play a strong role in developing Sarawak's human resource capital and boasts of many alumnus who have become highly successful in their chosen fields.
